Cyber Crime Laws

  • The IT Act of 2000 recognizes the various forms of electronic data storage and communication. It also has associated legalities of governing cybercrimes. The legislation is to protect fields like e-governance, e-commerce, and e-banking. Various sections of the act deal with penalties and punishments for specific crimes against individuals or organizations.
  • The Indian Penal Code 1860 also covers some aspects of cyber-crimes. For example, publishing obscene material, cyberstalking, publishing someone’s personal content such as photos and videos without consent, forgery, theft of data, etc. are included in IPC 1860.
The Government of India is in a continuous process of building robust systems against cybercrimes. New frameworks are read together with the laws mentioned above to arrive at appropriate penalties for specific types of cybercrimes.

Cyber Laws Against Serious Cyber Crimes

From personal use, small-scale businesses, banking, and governance, to international businesses, everything is now on the digital platform. Signatures are digital, payments are digital, and all data associated with individuals and companies are on the Internet. Everywhere in the world, the risk of cyber-attacks is increasing day by day. According to estimates, our country loses several billion owing to cybercrimes. This has obvious effects on our economy too. Cyber-attacks also target children. Predating children online using chats and games is very prevalent now. Producing and publishing Child pornography is also a serious crime. A person can be imprisoned for up to 7 years and/or fined up to INR 10 Lakhs if found guilty of such crimes. Terrorism of any form is not acceptable in India. Any act of cybercrime that threatens the security, unity, and integrity of our country is considered to be cyberterrorism. This is often done by accessing crucial computer resources and data without authorization. This is a serious crime and a non-bailable offense.

Prevention of Cyber Crimes

Prevention of cyber crimes is a matter of high priority for individuals and organizations. Much software has been developed over the years to protect personal and important information from being leaked or misused. Websites that deal with crucial data use protective features to prevent cybercrimes.

  • Do not share bank details or other sensitive information with strangers and on unprotected websites.
  • Use the best possible security settings and software to protect the data in your computer and cyberspace.
  • Do not click on suspicious links or enter any of your details on websites that you don’t trust.
  • Be careful while using public Wi-Fi. Do not enter passwords or account details while connected to public Wi-Fi.
